KOTA TINGGI – Five more bodies of the foreigners whose boat capsized near the waters of Tanjung Balau have been found between 6.45 am and 7.56 am this morning.
With that, the death toll of the boat tragedy involving Indonesian illegal immigrants has increased to 16 victims.
Johor State Deputy Operations Director of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Captain Simon Templer Lo Ak Tusa said that the five new bodies were recovered near the location of the incident.
“The bodies we found this morning comprised of four men and one woman. The first male body was found 10 metres from the location, the second man was found 10 metres away.
“Meanwhile, we found the third body about 100 metres away and the fourth and fifth were found between 2 to 2.5 kilometres from the site,” he said in a media statement today.
Yesterday, a boat carrying 50 illegal immigrants from Lombok, Indonesia capsized at the waters of Tanjung Balau, causing the death of 11. The search and rescue team was looking for the remaining 25 missing people.
Based on the statement from the 14 survivors, they were believed to have stopped for transit at Batam after leaving Lombok, before boarding the unfortunate speed boat to enter Johor waters. -MalaysiaGazette
