KUALA LUMPUR – The Member of Parliament (MP) of Muar, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman listed the names of 32 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the government who failed to be present at the Dewan Rakyat to vote for the amendment of Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) yesterday.

He said, their failure to attend the sitting caused the government to fail in passing the motion to amend Subsection 4(5) of the SOSMA 2021.

“I want to mention this. 32 Members of the Parliament from the government was absent to vote – this also caused the motion to be successfully dismissed by the opposition.

“They were Sembrong (overseas), Santubong, Tanah Merah (umrah), Kuala Pilah, Ayer Hitam (overseas), Tapah, Kota Marudu, Bandar Tun Razak, Nibong Tebal, Keningau, Rompin, Bukit Gantang, Pekan, Marang, Pagoh, Putrajaya, Kuala Nerus, Kinabatangan, Batang Lupar, Pasir Mas, Lahad Datu, Pontian, Bagan Datuk, Tasek Gelugor, Pasir Puteh, Lenggong, Bintulu, and Alor Gajah,” he said in his Facebook post today.

Syed Saddiq also listed three MPs who came late while the bloc vote was taking place yesterday.

“Gombak (Entered the House late), Padang Besar (Entered the House late), Ketereh (Entered the House late),” he added.

The President of Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) said, those MPs could have chosen to pass the motion, instead, they chose to be absent.

“Thus, the government could have passed the motion yesterday, but they chose to be absent at the Dewan Rakyat, to exercise their right to vote as the Member of Parliament,” said Syed Saddiq.

Yesterday, the motion for the extension of Subsection 4(5) SOSMA 2012 failed to garner enough of support from the Dewan Rakyat during the bloc vote with only 84 voted in favour while 86 voted against the motion. Meanwhile, 50 MPs were not present.

Therefore, the subsection which allows a suspect to be arrested for up to 28 days without trial would no longer be valid after it expires on 31 July 2022. -MalaysiaGazette
