KUALA LUMPUR – The movement to hunt down and arrest 528 Rohingya detainees who broke out from the Sungai Bakap Temporary Immigration Depot in Penang early this morning is ongoing actively.
The Director-General of Immigration, Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud said that the operation is conducted with the cooperation from the police, Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (RELA) and the help of the public.
He said, as of 10.00 am this morning, 362 detainees have been rearrested, meanwhile, they are mobilising the search for the remaining detainees who are at large.
“528 Rohingya ethnic detainees had escaped from the Sungai Bakap Temporary Immigration Depot in Penang at about 4.30 am this morning.
“They broke out after breaking the door and grill of the block. Officers on duty had activated the SOP by contacting the police and relevant agencies for assistance,” he said in a media statement today.
They ran a riot before escaping from the detention depot.
Khairul Dzaimee also requested the public with information about the escapees to contact the Immigration Department of the police. -MalaysiaGazette
