IPOH – The High Court sentenced the Tronoh State Assemblyman (ADUN), Paul Yong Choo Kiong to 13 years in prison and two lashes of the cane after finding him guilty of raping his former Indonesian maid three years ago.
Ipoh High Court Judge, Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed passed the judgement to Paul Yong, a former DAP representative who is now the Treasurer of Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) after finding that the prosecution managed to prove that charge was beyond reasonable doubt.
However, Abdul Wahab also allowed the application of the counsel representing the accused, Datuk Rajpal Singh for a stay of execution pending for appeal at the Court of Appeal.
He was allowed bail at RM30,000 with a surety and he was also ordered to turn in his travel document such as passport to the court.
On 31 March, the defence team led by Datuk Rajpal Singh and Salim Bashir concluded the case by summoning three witnesses including Paul Yong and his wife, Too Choon Looi, 46, and the final witness, Muhammad Rusdi, 51, the uncle of the victim.
On 23 August 2019, Paul Yong, who was then the Housing, Local Government, Public Transport, Non-Muslim Affairs and New Villages Exco was charged with raping a woman who was in a room at a house in Meru Desa Park, Bandar Meru Raya.
The act was committed around 8.15am to 9.15 pm on 7 July 2019.
The charge against him is framed under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code. -MalaysiaGazette
