THERE is nothing wrong with buying or using golden numbers, attractive numbers, or even popular numbers as Vehicle Registration Numbers. It is perfectly legal and above board. We all know the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has it for sale through the JPJ e-bid system and mySikap portal.
However, I call on vehicle owners, using fancy number plates to stop displaying and arranging the prefix and numbers to resemble names or phrases, by means of non standard fonts, size, distance between letters and numbers on the vehicle plates.
It is clearly against the law and most certainly do not adhere to the official JPJ specifications. It serves no purpose other than to confuse other drivers, and also the authorities.
Vehicle registration numbers are setup for a clear reason, which is to be identified. It does not matter, if you drive a luxury car or an everyday workhorse. Your number plate bearing the vehicle registration number needs to be displayed clearly and legible.
The law is loud and clear, alleged offenders may face a fine or imprisonment. Vehicle owners, who use and continue to use these fancy number plates, have no regards for the law and it does not seem a deterrent to their actions.
Hence, I strongly urge members of the public to unite and put an end to this menace. Heed the call of the authorities to report such irresponsible actions. Utilize the MyJPJ mobile application under the e-aduan field. Fill up the necessary details along with photographic evidence of the alleged offence and submit it for further action. Your efforts will contribute to the end of fancy number plate usage.
We need a concerted effort to stop this phenomenon. I urge vehicle owners using fancy number plates to channel your creativity elsewhere. Road safety does not only mean safe and defensive driving and ensuring good maintenance of your vehicle. Being seen and identifiable is also equally as important.
