KUALA LUMPUR – The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) view the online gambling syndicates abusing the name of the security force to trick the public seriously

The Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) Director, Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan said, based on the intel and public information, they found that the online gambling syndicates are getting more blatant.

He said, some syndicates alleged that they got the permission to operate from the PDRM at commercial premises.

“We have never granted any green light to any syndicate to operate their online gambling activities.

“We view the actions of these online gambling syndicates seriously. They dared to claim that the senior PDRM officers have granted green light to their illegal activities and they are getting more blatant in committing crime.

“We are giving a stern warning to the online gambling syndicates to stop their action (of abusing the name of the police) and severe actions will be taken against them without compromise. They actions are being closely monitored,” he said during a news conference on the operation against online gambling.

He added, it is a huge challenge to the PDRM to eradicate online gambling activities due to the high public demands.

The ease of accessing websites from anywhere has become the factor to the increment of online gambling syndicates.

Meanwhile, Abd Jalil also said that the police launched Special Op Dadu since 15 January to eliminate online gambling activities nationwide.

“The online gambling syndicates are believed to have made up stories on getting the approval to operate from the senior officers of PDRM to threaten the police on duty who wanted to raid or inspect their premises,” he said.

The Special Op Dadu was held concurrently nationwide from 25 January until 2 February through 826 raids. 1,355 civilians and premise caretakers have been arrested through the raids.

The police also confiscated 2,558 laptops, tablets and smartphones and RM189,196 of cash.

“Selangor led the score with 132 raids, 342 arrests and RM30,078 confiscated, followed by Johor with 99 raids, 105 arrests and RM45,927 in cash and 94 raids were conducted in Kuala Lumpur with 213 arrests involving RM13,965 in cash,” he said.

Abd Jalil also said that the CCID has worked together with the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) to ensure that no senior PDRM officers are backing the online gambling syndicates as alleged.

He said, the JIPS were involved in each operation to ensure that all raids were conducted according to the standard operating procedures.

Besides that, all operation reports will be referred to the JIPS for further evaluation, involving the members of the force involved in the operation.

“We will also investigate all detainees because they have been watching over the premises and operating the online gambling centres after they received the orders from their superiors.

“We will enhance our investigation to unmask the people behind online gambling as these digital activities were brought in from abroad,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
