KUALA LUMPUR – The taxi operators were infuriated by the decision to allow Grab to provide e-hailing services during the 29th SEA Games which will take place this August.

The founder of premium taxi company, Big Blue Taxi Service, Datuk Shamsubahrin Ismail questioned the approval announced recently by Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin after securing a RM6 million sponsorship from Grab for the international sports event.

“To me, this is seen as appointing an illegal company to provide service for the SEA Games.

“When did Grab get official approval from the authorities?” questioned Shamsubahrin in a media conference at Wisma Central, Kuala Lumpur today.

He said, the approval given to Grab breaks the law as its service has yet to be approved by the Parliament and its usage has yet to be gazetted.

“Grab is yet to be approved in the Parliament. Worse still, they don’t have the licence to carry passengers,” he added.

Shamsubahrin said, Khairy’s approval on Grab is unacceptable as it will badly affect the taxi industry in the country.

“His action in supporting the illegal activities will further deteriorate the taxi industry caused by Grab,” he said.

According Shamsubahrin, the services provided by Grab puts the passengers in high risk as they are not monitored by the authorities. For instance, a pregnant lady was robbed last week by a Grab driver.

“They put the tourists and passengers of SEA Games at high risks,” he added.

As an act of retaliation, he said, all taxi operators will boycott the application of Grab during the SEA Games.

“Therefore, all of us in the taxi industry, will boycott by not logging into the Grab application during the SEA Games,” he said.

He also threatened that if Khairy and the government refused to listen to the pleas of taxi operators, they will change their support to the oppositions during the coming general election. They will also ensure the taxi operators in Rembau to turn their backs against Khairy.

“We will not think twice to shift our support to the opposition in the coming general election if this issue cannot be resolved,” he added.

Grab is the Gold Sponsor for SEA Games, which will take place from 19 to 30 August this year. With an estimation sponsorship value of RM6 million, the sponsorship include cash, goods and services besides supporting the publicity of SEA Games via their digital platform. -MalaysiaGazette
