Illegal foreign workers, 566 employers arrested

The Immigration Department has arrested 566 employers for hiring illegal immigrants in the first six months of the year

PUTRAJAYA – The Immigration Department has arrested 566 employers for hiring illegal immigrants in the first six months of the year, according to the Director General of Immigration, Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali.

He said, they were arrested for protecting and hiring illegal foreign workers in accordance to Section 56 (1) and Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/1963.

During the same timeframe, a total of 19,968 illegal immigrants were arrested for various offences.

From that figure, Indonesians and Bangladeshi topped the list with 7,490 and 4,065 individuals respectively.

Besides being punished in accordance to the law, the assets of employers may also be frozen upon conviction.

“The employers have a trend of hiring illegal immigrants as they are cheaper compared to hiring a local… they only think about profits,” he told Bernama recently.

Mustafar said, among the offences often committed by these illegal immigrants are no personal identification documentation, overstay, misuse of social visit pass, false documentation, unauthorized card besides other offences.

“Stern actions will be taken against all offences, regardless to its severity,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also requested all employers to register the illegal immigrants so that Enforcement Card or E-Card can be issued by 30 June, or they will face actions from the enforcement team.

The E-Card programme assist the employers to in filling the shortages in men power in the authorized sectors and the card will be valid until 15 February 2018.

The programme introduced on 15 February has been implemented in the Peninsular Malaysia.

The E-Card issuance by the Immigration Department enables the employers to rehire the illegal immigrants legally. -MalaysiaGazette
