WASHINGTON – Former Democratic US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Donald Trump’s “hovering demeanour” during one of last year’s debates made her so uncomfortable her “skin crawled.”
Clinton recalls her thoughts during the October 9 debate in a memoir due out next month.
Two days before the debate, a video in which Trump bragged about groping women was released, and during the town-hall style debate Trump hovered over the much shorter Clinton as she responded to questions.
“This is not OK, I thought,” Clinton says in an audio narration of an excerpt of the memoir “What Happened,” set for release September 12.
“Donald Trump was looming behind me. Two days before, the world heard him brag about groping women. Now we were on a small stage and no matter where I walked, he followed me closely, staring at me, making faces. It was incredibly uncomfortable; he was literally breathing down my neck. My skin crawled.”
The publisher, Simon & Schuster, posted a link to the audio excerpt on Twitter and at the book’s website.
“Writing this wasn’t easy,” Clinton said. “Every day that I was a candidate for president, I knew that millions of people were counting on me and I couldn’t bear the idea of letting them down. But I did. I couldn’t get the job done. And I’ll have to live with that for the rest of my life.”
The book is not a comprehensive account of the 2016 race, she said, rather about raising the curtain on an experience that was “exhilarating, joyful, humbling, infuriating and just plain baffling.” -dpa
