PULAU PINANG – Despite having received strong objections prior to the project commencement, the Penang Island City Council went head on to approve the construction at the tragedy site which caused the lives of 11 individuals.

Two years ago, Tanjung Bungah State Assemblyman, Teh Yee Cheu, a well-known environment activist threatened to hold a hunger protest in objection of the project.

Nevertheless, the residents and his objections were ignored by the authorities.

Perhaps, if they had accepted Yee Cheu’s early warnings, the fatal incident could have been avoided.

Although, the promise of stern actions by the state government and the Chief Minister’s promises to investigate on the disaster, lives have been lost.

A report in Sinchew Daily confirmed that Yee Cheu, who left DAP opposed to the construction project. However, his objections did not receive the attention by the Penang Island City Council.

“Two years ago, I stated that I wanted to get naked and hold a hunger strike in objection of this project.

“Now, after the tragedy, I want the officers in Penang Island City Council to go naked, fast and apologise.

“The local authorities need to be more cautious and inspect all projects in hill slopes,” he told Sinchew Daily. – MalaysiaGazette
