KUALA LUMPUR – Political analysts claimed that Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz’s behaviour and action of not accepting criticisms from MCA leaders following his comments involving the sugar tycoon, Robert Kuok could be a liability for the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

It is worrying that it may even threaten BN’s effort and momentum in winning the coming 14th General Election (GE14) as he could cause racial disharmony.

The Principal Fellow of Institute of Ethnic Studies from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Prof Datuk Dr Teo Kok Seong said, the rude choice of words by Nazri could cause misunderstandings.

The situation was made worse when it was directed at the leaders of the biggest Chinese component party in BN.

“I think that the best way for BN leaders is to solve this issue amicably and internally, not speaking in the public.

“We know that Nazri may be rude. Events like this nearing GE14 will only give negative impacts, especially among the Chinese community.

“It is alright if they only see this as an isolated case. However, if they start to relate it to the Malays and UMNO by stating Nazri is a Malay and such, that will be worrisome,” he said when contacted by MalaysiaGazette today.

Kok Seong said, the two MCA leaders Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan and Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker slammed Nazri did not mean that they were defending Kuok.

He elaborated that Kuok is well known for his contributions to the country. That is an unarguable fact.

Meanwhile, another analyst, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jeniri Amir emphasized that Nazri should know better when making sensitive statements, especially when he is a senior minister and also a leader in UMNO.

He said, as a Malay descendent, the Padang Rengas Member of Parliament should be more civilised in his actions and not be such a fouled mouth.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jeniri Amir from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).

“Statements like that not only give negative impacts to himself, but also to the party. He should have known,” he said.

Jeniri added, Nazri is overly confident in making statements on controversial issues, including those that can create conflicts from various corners. It was seen in his previous clash with a Sarawak Minister prior to this.

He added, in a mature, cultured and well-mannered politics, Nazri should not thrash those who criticise him with fouled words as it will lead to lingering effects.

“Perhaps, in his mind, only Nazri is ‘clever’ in Malaysia and the rest of them are all ‘stupid’.

“I am not surprised if Nazri would call me stupid too as he will do whatever he can to thrash those who are opposed to him,” he said. – MalaysiaGazette
