KUALA LUMPUR – Embezzlement and bribery of government’s funds are among the charges that will be pressed upon former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The charges were based on the investigations on the looted funds allegedly belonged to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), said Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

In an interview with Reuters, he said that the investigators in Malaysia ‘have an almost perfect case’ on the main suspect who had misappropriated the 1MDB and public funds.

He also claimed that Najib who founded 1MDB played a central role.

“He was fully responsible for 1MDB. Nothing can be done without his signature, and we have his signature on all the deals entered into by 1MDB. Therefore, he is responsible,” said Dr Mahathir.

The investigators are looking to bring a number of charges upon Najib, said Dr. Mahathir. According to him, the charges would based on his power abuse during his reign as the Prime Minister.

“They could include “embezzlement, stealing government money, losing government money and a number of other charges. Using government money to bribe. All those things,” he said, adding that Najib’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor was also investigated on 1MDB.

“Some of the money is believed to have gone to her, lots of money. We know about this, but finding the paper trail is a bit more difficult in this case because she doesn’t sign any papers. Najib signs a lot of papers,” he added.

Dr Mahathir said that he expected the first arrest on the 1MDB scandal would be made in these few months and hopefully, to start a trial by end of this year.

“We are working as hard as possible at a furious pace. We think that we already have almost a perfect case,” Mahathir said.

When asked to name the targets of the 1MDB case, Dr Mahathir said: “On Najib, Jho Low and several others.”

Jho Low is seen as the central figure in the 1MDB scandal.

Low’s lawyer could not be immediately reached for comment on Dr Mahathir’s statement.

“When we go to the courts, we will have clear evidence of the wrongdoing. We cannot afford to lose,” said Mahathir. – MalaysiaGazette
