KUALA LUMPUR – The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has consented the appointment of Amirudin Shari as the Menteri Besar of Selangor in accordance to the Constitution of Selangor 1959.
It was also in line with the common practice of the appointment of Menteri Besar in Selangor.
On 7 June, the Sultan of Selangor had received a letter from the President of Keadilan (PKR), Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who proposed three names to seek His Royal Highness’s approval on whom He felt was eligible in accordance with the Constitution of Selangor to be sworn in as the Menteri Besar of Selangor.
“The letter dated 7 June 2018 by the President of PKR has indirectly cancelled the previous letter written by the political party leaders in Selangor to the Sultan of Selangor,” the Selangor Palace said in a statement.
After observing the list and getting the opinion from Mohamed Azmin, the Selangor Sultan has given his consent to appoint one of the candidate from the list, Amirudin Shari, who is also the Sungai Tua State Assemblyman as the 14th Menteri Besar of Selangor.
“For reference, the Sultan of Selangor has the power in appointing the Menteri Besar under the providence of Article 51 and Article 53 of the Laws of the Constitution of Selangor 1959,” the statement added.
The statement said that Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had taken note of the prerequisites in the Constitution of Selangor whereby His Royal Highness has to appoint as the Menteri Besar a state assemblyman who, in his opinion, commands the majority support and must be a Malay and a Muslim.
The palace also rebut the statement of Ijok State Assemblyman who also questioned the appointment of Mohamed Azmin Ali as the Menteri Besar of Selangor on 11 May as having not received the blessings from the leadership of Pakatan Harapan. It said, the component parties of Pakatan Harapan namely, the President of PKR, President of PAN, President of PPBM and the Secretary-General of DAP had sent a letter to the Sultan of Selangor for the appointment of Azmin as the Selangor Menteri Besar.
The nomination was made based on the fact that Mohamed Azmin was the previous Menteri Besar of Selangor and had carried out his duties and responsibilities with dedications. He had also led the Pakatan Harapan to win a bigger majority in the previous general election.
Therefore, the allegations by Ijok’s State Assemblyman who claimed that he was nominated as the Menteri Besar of Selangor was not true.
The Selangor Palace always observes the providence of the law and the convention in not interfering with politics, said the statement. -MalaysiaGazette
