KUALA LUMPUR – There is a big possibility that the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) would be placed under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development, said its Deputy Minister Dr. Hatta Ramli.

He added, the Minister of Entrepreneur Development Redzuan Md. Yusoff had a discussion with Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on that matter.

“There is a component in MARA which involves entrepreneurism, however, I dare not comment more. Let the Prime Minister make the announcement.

“MARA is a big institution which plays important role in various fields, not merely in entrepreneurism.

“It is truly more suitable for it to be placed under the care of the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development so that we can fully coordinate and strengthen it,” he told the journalists after attending a dialogue session with the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.

Besides MARA, Dr Hatta said that the Socioeconomic Development of Indian Community Unit (SEDIC) would also be placed under the Entrepreneur Development Ministry.

SEDIC was established since 2014 and was previously placed under the Prime Minister’s Department.

For the record, the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development was established in 1995 to give special focus on Bumiputera entrepreneur development, to speed up the objective of creating a Trade and Industrial Bumiputera Community (MPPB).

However, during the reshuffling of cabinet on 27 March 2004, the ministry was given a new name, Ministry of Entrepreneur and Co-operatives with added responsibilities towards the Department of Co-operatives Development, Cooperative College of Malaysia and Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Berhad.

The ministry was then disbanded with its agencies distributed to other ministries such as the Ministry of Rural and Development Development, Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism. – MalaysiaGazette
