TALLINN – Atletico Madrid won the Uefa Super Cup 4-2 after extra time at Tallinn’s Lillekula Stadium on Wednesday.
Diego Costa gave Atletico Madrid the lead after just 49 seconds, beating both Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane before firing past Keylor Navas.
But Real Madrid levelled on 27 minutes when Karim Benzema headed Gareth Bale’s deep cross past Jan Oblak.
Ramos thought he had won the game when he scored a penalty on 63 minutes after Juanfran had handled.
But man-of-the-match Costa got the equaliser with 12 minutes left from Angel Correa’s cross.
Saul volleyed Atletico Madrid 3-2 ahead nine minutes into extra time from Thomas Partey’s centre and Koke added a fourth to seal victory.
“It’s always hard to come back against Atletico Madrid. We did it once but we could not do it again. They kill you on the counter attack,” said Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui.
“They hurt us after the third goal. We lost a little bit of order in our play.
“I feel frustrated and sad to lose my first final. But I know the responsibility tomorrow is to start working again and start the season as we know we should.”
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone, who watched the game from the stand because he was serving a touchline ban, said: “We needed to give everything to win the game and we found something extra to get the third and fourth goals.” -DPA
