KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia needs to stop talking about political issues. On the contrary, they need to identify and handle issues that will give impact to the national economy.

Prof Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram said, the economy is facing real problems now.

“Forget about politics now, you can wait until before the next general election. For now, we need to unite for the country,” said the member of the Council of Eminent Persons and economist when met at the Malaysian Economic Convention 2019.

He said, the economy is facing real problems amid an obdurate external situation which is deteriorating on an almost daily basis.

Although the external factors are beyond the control of the government, Malaysia need to brace itself to face the tough situation which is expected to continue.

Jomo believes that Malaysia will be caught in the trade wars between the United States of America and China.

China is the major trade partner of Malaysia and there are Malaysian investments with China as well as joint-ventures.

“It is tough for Malaysia to get out of the situation as it (China) is part of our economy,” he said.

He also emphasized that Malaysia need to start acting on domestic investment as 90 percent of the national investment is domestic investment. -MalaysiaGazette
