KUALA LUMPUR – The 8th witness of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) trial was seen hesitated when he was continued to be bombarded by questions during the cross-examination by the lawyer representing Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Datuk Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin, the former Special Officer of Najib during his reign as the Prime Minister said that he was unsure about Low Taek Jho Low or Jho Low’s claim that he was the ‘advisor’ to the then Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin.
Amhari who had the opportunity of attending the 1MDB meeting when it was then known as Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA) started to suspect the role played by Jho Low.
However, according to Amhari, he was only a junior officer then and he did not have the authority like other senior officers such as the late Datuk Azlin Alias.
Amhari: I doubted Jho Low’s claim that he was the advisor of Sultan Mizan.
Shafee: But you did nothing? You did not tell Datuk Najib?
Amhari: I was still a junior officer. I did not have access to him. It was only through the late Datuk Azlin Alias and Datuk Seri Aziz.
Shafee: Didn’t you know that it was an important issue? Have you taken part during a TIA meeting?
Amhari: I’ve told you. I was only a junior back then. It is a norm for government officers to attend meetings, listen, observe and keep quiet before going home. That was what I did.
Shafee: I have also been a civil servant for eight years. I did not do what you said.
Amhari: Can I explain? I only attended as a show of respect to Datuk Najib from the officer of the Deputy Prime Minister. I was called to attend the meeting because I’ve attended the previous meeting. That was it.
Shafee: Didn’t you feel that was important? A person claiming to be an advisor to Agong but he wasn’t?
Amhari: I told the late Datuk Azlin and Datuk Aziz.
Shafee: Did you write letter about your doubts?
Amhari: I have explained, I was only a junior officer.
Shafee: Stop dodging by saying that you were a junior. I suggest that you had benefited from Jho Low and that was why although you doubted, you did not tell anyone.
Amhari: I don’t agree.
Defence counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah continued to cross-examine Amhari before High Court Judge Colin Lawrence Sequerah. – MalaysiaGazette
