PUTRAJAYA – The closure of schools following the haze which hit several areas will be based on the Air Pollution Index (API) of the area.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said, there is no need to close the schools continuously until this Friday as the API readings in every area is different.

“We cannot just shut schools down. We need to know that the haze condition (API) is different in each area.

“According to the report this morning, the haze may shift to Kedah and Perlis,” he said during a press conference after launching the New Malaysia Foreign Policy Frame Work at the Prime Minister’s Office today.

Also present was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.

Earlier, Mahathir was asked to comment if there is a need to extend the closure of schools in areas badly affected by the haze until this Friday, following parents only know about the closure of schools when they arrive at schools.

This morning, a total of 82 schools in Batu were closed following the haze. As of 11.00 am this morning, 57 additional schools were ordered close. The number however, increased to another 25 schools two hours later in the Batu Muda area.
