KUALA LUMPUR – The six Barisan Nasional (BN) Members of Parliament (MP) who stated their support for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad could affect the party in the Tanjung Piai by-election this 16 November.

The Johor Bahru UMNO Division Chief, Tan Sri Shahrir Samad said, the action could cause UMNO and BN to fail in achieving at least 80 percent support from the Malay voters.

“I am sorry for I need to reprimand our MP friends who stated their support for Tun Dr Mahathir to remain as the Prime Minister until the end of the term.

“Firstly, it will impact our Tanjung Piai by-election. The Malay voters targeted by UMNO and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) is 57 percent from the total voters. If we want to win, the BN candidate needs to get 80 percent of the Malay votes.

“To me, the stand took by the six UMNO MPs at this moment will confuse the Malay voters who are on the fence. They may think that there is no difference between UMNO and PPBM,” he said yesterday.

Last Thursday, six UMNO MPs came forward and stated their support for Tun Dr Mahathir to continue his mandate as the Prime Minister until the next General Election.

The six individuals are namely, Mohd Shahar Abdullah (Paya Besar), Datuk Dr Adham Baba (Tenggara), Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Abdul Rahman Mohamad (Lipis), Datuk Seri Ismail Abdul Muttalib (Maran) and Datuk Ahmad Nazlan Idris (Jerantut).

In a press conference at the Parliament, the six MPs said that Dr Mahathir needs to remain as the PM to ensure political and economic stability.

According to Shahrir, although UMNO also do not want the President of PKR, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be the Prime Minister, however, the party regarded that as an internal issue of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.

On the similar issue, 18 MPs from PAS said that the six UMNO MPs had moved ahead of the party.

“As a leader of a party and not an MP, perhaps the six MPs would think that, “Who is the MP? Me or you?.

“When the people are angry and pressured by the failure and weakness of the PH government, will the support for Tun Dr. Mahathir solve the problems of the people and the country?

“That is how naïve our MPs are! I am very sorry. I am irritated thinking about the Tanjung Piai by-election,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
