PETALING JAYA – Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is expected to not handover his position as the Prime Minister until after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2020 in November next year.
Based on a source from the Pakatan Harapan, the event is important and it will also be attended by world leaders such as President Xi Jinping from China.
“Although there is no black and white on the date of power transition, it is not expected to take place before the APEC,” the source told Sinchew Daily.
According to the source, APEC, dubbed as the most important conference global conference after the United Nations Congress will ensure three main ministers’ position remain unchanged before the summit.
“Minister of Economic Affair, Minister of International Trade and Industry and the Minister of Foreign Affairs play vital roles in organising the APEC.
“The three positions should not have changes within a year from now,” said the source.
Although there are quarters who think that Dr Mahathir should surrender his post after two years, the leaders in PH has a contradicting view.
“Some think that Dr Mahathir should be the first leader chosen by the people in the world to chair the APEC twice.
“This will enable him to surrender his position in a good manner,” he said.
Besides that, some also think that Dr Mahathir will only handover his position after Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is convicted for the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. – MalaysiaGazette
