KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Basketball Association (MABA) apologised over a blunder on the five-point star Malaysian flag displayed through a video clip during the opening ceremony of the 28th MABA Milo Lum Mun Chak Cup 2019.
The video clip which showed a five-point star Malaysian flag together with Westport logo during Negaraku went viral in the social media.
According to MABA, they take full responsibility for the mistake of the live broadcast.
“We apologise for this mistake, and we take full responsibility for such actions. Please forgive us, as we are always striving to grow and develop the sport of basketball in Malaysia,” MABA said in a statement.
Some netizens who were there during the opening ceremony were shocked by the display and alleged that it looked like the communists’ flag.
The Jalur Gemilang is comprised of a 14-point star flag, which represents the unity of 13 states and the Federal Territories.
Meanwhile, the UMNO Youth Exco, Mohd Fariz Abdul Hadi alleged that many weird things happen during the Pakatan Harapan administration.
However, the five-point star Malaysian flag is too much.
“How could the organiser overlook the Malaysian flag with the five-point star?
“Aren’t the organisers Malaysian?
“What does this mean? Was it done purportedly? Please take immediate action,” he said.
In the meantime, Westports Holdings Berhad (Westport) is awaiting for the explanation from MABA and the contractors involved in the live broadcast of the video clip.
Its Managing Director, Datuk Ruben Gnanalingam said that the company is aware of the mistake.
