KUALA LUMPUR – The Defence Counsel of Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah told the court that the defence will present important evidences in the trial involving RM42 million of SRC International fund.

The evidences include transactions which occurred without the knowledge of Najib during his reign as the Prime Minister.

“What I can say is that my client was never informed about the correct amount of money left in his account and Najib did not know about those transactions.

“There is also no solid proof which can prove that the RM42 million deposited into the Najib’s personal account in Ambank were used for his personal gratifications.

“The question on why Najib did not lodge a police report back then was because the case was already being investigated by the authorities and he had high faith in them to investigate the matter.

“He wanted to respect the integrity of the team which had started the investigation on those transactions,” he said.

In the statement, Muhammad Shafee emphasized that the Member of Parliament of Pekan had no personal interest in SRC International nor the RM42 million as charged.

He said, Najib’s involvement in the SRC Internation only started after getting the full approval from the Retirement Fund Incorporated (KWAP), cabinet and the Ministry of Finance.

It was no more than placing the interests of the country and the government led by Najib first and not for his personal benefits.

Earlier, Muhammad Shafee also highlighted that that despite the prosecution had presented 66 witnesses, the defence only had the opportunity to cross-examine seven witnesses.

The time given for the defence counsel to make preparations was too short, which was 21 days from the date of Najib was asked to enter defence on 11 November.

According to him, the situation forced his team to work around the clock including Saturdays and Sundays.

“In fact, the defence team, including my client would not have enough of time to prepare ourselves for the defence.

“We were only given a short notice while we may need months to prepare,” Muhammad Shafee said before Justice Mohd Nazlan before reading out his defence opening statement today.

Earlier, Najib took his oath at the accused dock. Muhammad Shafee informed that court that his client will be reading his 243 page witness statement with 317 questions in Malay language. – MalaysiaGazette
