CYBERJAYA – Malaysia will ensure that the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2020 is a success and the benefits from trade, investment and economic cooperation, are felt and enjoyed by its people despite facing various challenges, especially on trade policy tensions between different countries.

In addition, the APEC 2020 is one of the most important events as the Bogor Goals launched in 1994 would be coming to an end.

Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is proud that Malaysia is once again chosen as the organiser after 22 years and hopes that each member of the APEC economy to embrace the philosophy of Shared Prosperity.

Therefore, he said, “Malaysia has chosen the theme Optimising Human Potential Towards a Future of Shared Prosperity’ for Apec 2020.”

“It is time that member economies to consider embracing this philosophy and embed it in the current economic model.

“Improving the overall wellbeing of our people and enabling every citizen to have a more decent living standard will make APEC sustainable and relevant as a grouping in the long run,” he said during the APEC 2020 launch.

According to Dr Mahathir, every country needs to give meaning to their economic development efforts and must work together towards an equitable share of benefits, from large corporations to small-and-medium enterprises right down to their citizens.

“Apec is well-positioned to capitalise on its strength of voluntary, non-binding and consensus decision-making to instil and advocate more meaningful results in the global trade and investment arena,” he said.

During the previous news conference after the launch, the Prime Minister explained about the reason for Malaysia to reject the United States of America (USA)’s offer to host the APEC 2019 Summit in USA next January.

According to him, the meeting was not needed. Although Chile had to cancel the event at the very last minute, the country had been a good host throughout APEC 2019 which went on for a year.

“We think that it is not necessary and therefore, Malaysia, and almost all other countries rejected the invitation from USA.

“Although Chile had to cancel the Summit, the country has been a good host throughout the year for APEC 2019.

“No other country can do a better job than Chile,” he said. –MalaysiaGazette
