KUALA LUMPUR – Today marks the one year anniversary of the passing of Allahyarham Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, the firefighter who passed away after being attacked while he was on duty during the Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu temple riot in USJ 25, Subang Jaya.

Adib, 24, was the Emergency Medical Response Services (EMRS) member from the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Station. He took his last breath and succumbed to his injuries after fighting for his life for 21 days.

There were plenty of assumptions, speculations, news, denials, accusations since the bloody riot on 27 December 2018. The tragic incident not only sacrificed a life but the judiciary system in the country was also compromised.

The greatest achievement in the investigation into the death of Muhammad Adib was the Coroner’s Court decision on last 27 September when Coroner Rofiah Mohamad delivered the verdict that Adib died because of injuries of being attacked by a group of people.

Rofiah’s verdict that Muhammad Adib was assaulted matched the theory by Forensic Pathology Senior Consultant from the United Kingdom, Dr Shahrom Abd Wahid, who said during the inquest that there is a big possibility for Adib to be dragged out from the EMRS van. The victim may also be forcefully slammed on the door of the van.

“I conclude that the injuries in Muhammad Adib’s lungs was not self-inflicted.

“The action was a crime and it was carried out by two or more individuals on Adib, which caused his injuries,” said Rofiah.

The inquest to determine the cause of death of Adib started on 11 February following the various contradicting allegations on the EMRS member’s cause of death.

Rofiah ended the 41-day inquest on 24 July after getting the statements from 30 witnesses including experts to assist the court in making its decision.

A total of 137 exhibits were presented to the court.

Nevertheless, the court had rejected the application.

Thus, what else is exciting about Muhammad Adib’s case besides the Coroner Court’s decision which verified that Adib was assaulted?

Until this moment, the people, especially the family and friends of Adib are still waiting for new development on the case.

Throughout the year, various pictures and videos on the riot were distributed. The police have arrested four men, however, all of them have been released.

Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador had also given his guarantee that the police will continue their investigation.
