KUALA LUMPUR – During his New Year’s Eve 2020 speech, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that he travelled down memory lane to three decades ago when he launched the Vision 2020.

According to him, year 2020 is significant to him as the Vision 2020 was also launched at the same venue in the Merdeka Square in 1991 when he was the 4th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

“Year 2020 is rather significant to me as it is almost three decades ago when we launched the Vision 2020. Back then, we targeted for Malaysia to achieve the fully developed country status this year.

“However, due to several approaches taken by the fifth and sixth government leaders, thus, the Vision 2020 cannot be achieved this year and would require another 10 years,” he said during the Kuala Lumpur New Year Eve celebration and the launch of Visit Malaysia 2020 at the Merdeka Square before the clock struck 12.

Approximately 80,000 people from the capital swamped the Merdeka Square to witness the fireworks display and listen to the message delivered by the Prime Minister.

Mahathir also took the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year.

“We celebrate this new year with full of hope. We hope that year 2020 will give us more prosperity than 2019.

“Although there are some worries if something unexpected which could burden the people will happen, generally, we are confident that the efforts we put in 2019 will bear its fruits in 2020.

“The government also realised that throughout 2019, there were issues that raised dissatisfaction among the people. We are aware of those voices.

“The efforts to develop the country will be continued as the responsibility has been entrusted to the incumbent government,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
