KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was shocked by the action of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in revealing a series of nine audio recording clips which allegedly involved the former Prime Minister’s conversation with several individuals and foreign leaders.

The phone call recordings were related to the discussion with several parties on the scandal involving 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and SRC International Sdn Bhd which are currently being trialled at the High Court.

Najib, the Member of Parliament of Pekan expressed his astonishment as such exposure is the first of its kind in the history of the country.

“I am shocked and I am reviewing the content of the recording. I have instructed my lawyer to look into this issue before taking any action.

“It has never been done in our national history. And, it is during the Kimanis by-election,” he said briefly.

When asked if the conversations truly took place, Najib said that he would review the content of the audio recordings.

When asked if audio clips showed that his mobile phone was tapped, he said that if the tapping took place, it was done when he was the leader of the country.

“I was the leader of the country then. Let me study the legal aspects on what I can do,” he said.

Today, the MACC disclosed nine sets of audio recording with the total duration of 45 minutes, which the commission labelled as the highest level of criminal conspiracy.

The Chief Commissioner of MACC, Latheefa Koya alleged during the news conference that the recording of the conversations took place in 2016 and based on their investigation, they are authentic.

Among the recordings include the conversation of former Chief Commissioner of MACC Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad, who disclosed information on the 1MDB investigation to Najib in 2016.

The phone call recording was obtained by MACC from an unrevealed entity. The conversations included at least 20 individuals directly and indirectly and took place between 5 January 2016 until 29 July 2016.

Among the recordings included conversations between Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor; Dzulkifli; former Chairman of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) cum the Member of Parliament of Baling, Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim; former special aide to Najib, Datuk Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin and the Crown Prince of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohammed Zayed Al Nahyan and the Chief Executive of Mubadala Development Company (MDC) Khaldoon Al-Mubarak. –MalaysiaGazette
