PUTRAJAYA – Approximately 15 million Malaysians would benefit from the e-Tunai Rakyat initiative beginning tomorrow.
The RM450 million programme is a collaboration between the government and three major 3-wallet service providers in Malaysia.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said, the programme is eligible for citizens aged 18 years and above with the annual income of less than RM100,000. They would be able to receive RM30 through one of the three e-wallet platforms, namely, Grab, Boost and Touch n Go.
“The e-Tunai Rakyat Programme is one of the measures taken during the Budget 2020 announcement by the Ministry of Finance on 11 October 2019.
“The recipients can choose one of the three e-wallet service providers to receive RM30 from the government.
“The money can be spent on any goods or services available in the platform they chose,” he said in a news conference.
According to Guan Eng, the e-Tunai Rakyat initiative was introduced to encourage digital payment, especially in the retail sector.
He said, it is also a step towards a cashless society and digital payments can encourage transparency and accountability.
Guan Eng also said that it could reduce abuse, misappropriation and curb corruption.
“Everything is recorded online or in computers if we pay in digital format,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
