KUALA LUMPUR – The government is urged to abolish toll in stages until the concession ends for the next 38 years.

The President of Gerakan, Datuk Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said, the Pakatan Harapan government ought to fulfil their election promises although it will not be easy especially after announcing the 18 percent discount and maintaining the rate until 2058.

He said, the abolishment of toll will be able to balance the economic development besides helping the people to reduce their cost-of-living, especially those from the urban areas.

“Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia will continue to urge the government to fulfil their promise to abolish toll in stages, until the concession ends and also the provide free toll to all Malaysians.

“Although it may seemed tough for the government, it needs to be done in order to reduce the urban poverty rate in the country. The people are being pressured by the rising cost-of-living, SST and such.

“Thus, it is not wrong for the people to continue to hope that the government would reconsider their promises in abolishing tolls,” he said in a statement.

The Prime Minister’s Office announced an 18 percent toll discount for all private vehicles in all highways owned by PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) beginning 1 February.

The rate will apply to the North South Expressway, New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), North–South Expressway Central Link (ELITE), Malaysia – Singapore Second Link Expressway (LINKEDUA),  East Coast Expressway 2 (LTP2), Seremban-Port Dickson Highway (SPDH), Butterworth – Kulim Expressway (BKE) and the Penang Bridge.

The government’s decision to maintain the stake holdings of Khazanah Nasional Berhad and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) in PLUS enables the toll rate to be fixed with no increment for 38 years (2020 – 2058), until the concession ends.

The extension of 20 years of the concession beginning 2038 is to ensure PLUS is able to conduct maintenance and the operation of the expressways without depending on the government.

Elaborating on the latest update, Dominic said that the decision also meant that the people’s hope in seeing the government abolishing toll would remain merely a dream. -MalaysiaGazette
