KUALA LUMPUR – The government had fixed the new ceiling price for 3-ply face masks at RM1.50 per piece, 50 sen cheaper than its ceiling price enforced on 18 March.
According to Senior Minister (Defence), Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Malaysia does not produce enough of face masks and needs to import the item. Thus, the government needed to follow the global price rate.
“However, we will continue to revise its price. If the price reduces, we will revise,” he said during a news conference today.
On 20 March, the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumers Affair, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi announced the RM2.00 ceiling rate of face mask compared to its previous 80 sen per piece. According to him, the new ceiling price was enforced since 18 March.
He said, the new ceiling price will encourage more traders to import face mask to overcome its supply shortage in Malaysia.
However, the new ceiling price received the objection by many quarters, including the Prime Minister who thinks that the price was too high. -MalaysiaGazette
