KUALA LUMPUR – A letter to the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof on a motion of confidence for former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad went viral today.
The letter dated 1 May 2020 was written by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal using the letterhead of the P.189 Service Centre for the Member of Parliament of Semporna, Sabah. It notified the Speaker of his intention to table the motion in order to show that Mahathir still commanded majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.
The motion was made under Standing Orders 26(1) and read together with 27(3). In that letter, Shafie also said that his motion was not opposing to Article 43 of the Federal Constitution in diminishing the constitutional authority of the Yang diPertuan Agong to appoint a Prime Minister. On the contrary, it was to clear the matter to the Dewan Rakyat and also the people.
Mohamad Ariff verified the authenticity of the letter and said that a media statement will be issued regarding the matter.
The Dewan Rakyat will be sitting for a day on 18 May to discuss about Government Bills and matters following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Therefore, no questions and answers session will be allowed under the Standing Orders 22(2) and 22(5). -MalaysiaGazette
