KUALA LUMPUR – DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) are confident that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) can afford to wait for six more months before the President of PKR, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is hailed as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
In a joint-statement, the Secretary-General of DAP, Lim Guan Eng and the President of Amanah, Mohamad Sabu, said that they have been consistent in supporting Anwar as the candidate of the Malaysian Prime Minister since 1998 and will continue to do so.
However, they also said that the current political scenario also encouraged them to agree with their second option, Dr. Mahathir as the ninth Prime Minister of Malaysia for six months. After that period, the position must be replaced by Anwar as the 10th Prime Minister of the country.
“The political journey has taken 22 years. Thus, PH can afford to wait for six more months to see Anwar being hailed as the 10th Prime Minister,” said Guan Eng and Mohamad.
According to the duo, the power transition from Dr Mahathir to Anwar after the six months period will be documented in writing, signed by all party leaders and be announced openly.
According to Guan Eng and Mohamad, with the current political scenario, the only realistic choice for PH to succeed is to combine the strength of all five parties involving PKR, Amanah, DAP Warisan and those supporting Dr Mahathir in Bersatu.
They said, although Dr Mahathir, Warisan and PKR do not see eye to eye, all parties in PH (Plus) must find a common ground to reclaim the mandate given by the people during the General Election (GE) in 2018.
In a statement recently, PKR announced that it rejects the second option of nominating Dr. Mahathir as the Prime Minister and Anwar as the Deputy Prime Minister with the power transition to the President of PKR after a six months period.
PKR reached the decision after Warisan and Dr Mahathir rejected the first option of nominating Anwar as the Prime Minister and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as the Deputy Prime Minister.
Both options were presented during the Presidency Council Meeting chaired by Anwar on 30 May.
According to them, in their effort to honour the mandate given by the people to change the government in GE14, some quarters took the opportunity and labelled PH as power craze.
They said, PH has been criticised for acting slowly in reclaiming the mandate of the people but when it found a realistic approach, it was criticised for allegedly being power craze.
“This is unfair. Although we are not afraid of being the opposition, the people have voted in 2018 for us to take over the government.
“Both of us, DAP and Amanah have worked hard for the past three months to find a common ground which can be accepted by everyone.
“Unfortunately, that effort has yet to be fruitful. We hope that PKR and Dr Mahathir, along with Warisan will not rift apart, but will be united,” they said.
Seeing each other as foes, not partners, Mohamad and Guan Eng said that such thoughts will not help those who were rightfully given mandate by the people but would only assist those who are toppled by the people to form a government without the mandate of the people.
“There should no longer be any dealings with the main character (former PH leader) responsible in toppling the valid PH which enabled the Perikatan National (PN) government to rule without mandate.
“The voters of PH will not forgive those who betrayed the trust given to them.
“They have handed the honour given to PH leaders, Warisan and Bersatu who braced through threats and seduction to reject the PN government which did not receive the mandate,” said the statement.
Yesterday, Anwar said that he was suspicious with the suggestions of providing opportunity to Dr Mahathir to lead the country again after the latter failed to handover the power despite the former Prime Minister promised to do so after the APEC conference end of this year.
Anwar said that the 24 years given to Dr Mahathir to rule is enough and it is time to surrender the position according to the promised turn. –MalaysiaGazette
