KUALA LUMPUR – Ad hoc Public Prosecutor Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram alleged that he never mentioned the name of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his meeting with Tan Sri Apandi Ali in the early 2018.
Sri Ram who led the prosecution team of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said, his presence at Apandi’s residence was merely to give him professional legal advice.
Sri Ram made that statement in his reply affidavit filed at the Registrar Office of the Kuala Lumpur High Court after Apandi filed an affidavit to support Najib’s application in removing Sri Ram as a member of the prosecution team against him in his 1MDB trial.
In the reply affidavit, Sri Ram also alleged that he was never instructed by Dr Mahathir to persuade Apandi in arresting Najib, who was the then Prime Minister in January 2018.
“My friend, Apandi Ali has stated the wrong facts. At that time, Apandi and his wife, Puan Sri Faridah had become the victims of cybertroopers. It was related to an article in a portal managed by Apandi’s brother-in-law.
“Apandi told me that the attacks were made under the employment of Najib, among which accused him for being disloyal, abusing his power and his inefficiency as the Attorney-General and his wife had nothing to do with any of that.
“I then went to Apandi’s house and met Farida on my professional capacity. JR Tey was also with me. During the meeting, I gave him certain advices, under the protection of legal professional.
“Apandi seemed disappointed by those attacks. In our conversation, I advised Apandi that there were statements about Najib which came to public knowledge and it was his duty to arrest and charge Najib.
“Never in our conversation did I mention that I was sent by Tun Mahathir,” he said in his affidavit.
Earlier, Apandi, in his affidavit alleged that Sri Ram tried to persuade him to arrest Najib over corruption several months before the 2018 General Election.
According to Sri Ram, he also did not hold any discussion to freeze account as mentioned by Apandi besides talking about the ongoing audit case.
Among the 1MDB cases faced by Najib include the misappropriation of RM2.28 billion belonging to 1MDB besides meddling with the 1MDB audit report.
Sri Ram alleged that Apandi is attempting to help Najib by thwarting the ongoing trial.
“The short time frame between the Facebook statement and the interview with the date to resume the trial for 1MDB audit case showed that this is an attempt to thwart the trial.
“This was also expressed by Najib’s counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah during the first day of the 1MDB audit report trial after the court was resumed, to postpone the trial until the application is resolved,” he added. –MalaysiaGazette
