KUALA LUMPUR – The new Speaker of Dewan Rakyat, Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun said that he would not take a controversial stand in his new responsibility.
“The people said during my appointment as the EC Chairman, but I did not act in a controversial way, and, I will not act in a controversial manner here too. This is a responsibility.
“We acted according to the Federal Constitution and law and I would like to uphold it,” he said in a news conference after assuming the position as the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat.
Azhar Azizan replaces Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof who was removed from his position today after the motion for the latter to vacate the post was passed at the Dewan Rakyat with 111 votes.
Meanwhile, 109 Members of Parliament voted against the motion by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Besides Azhar, the Member of Parliament of Pengerang, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said was also appointed as the Deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat after the seat fell vacant following the resignation of Nga Kor Ming today.
When asked if he would regret accepting the position, Azhar said, “That is not the zoo. That is our Dewan Rakyat.”
Azhar also revealed that he was offered that position by Muhyiddin.
“I was not instructed to accept the position. I was invited by the government to be the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat and I agreed,” he added. –MalaysiaGazette
