KUALA LUMPUR – Former Speaker of Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof said that Malaysia has created its own record after removing him from his position.
He said, the action has never happened in any other country before this.
“What happens now is extraordinary and I am not sure if other countries, other than Trinidad and Tobago has done such thing.
“Trinidad removed its Speaker in the 90’s because the Speaker was involved in corruption.
“However, there are no other example for the past 800 years. No Speaker was removed from position before the end of a Parliamentary term,” he said in a news conference today.
Mohamad Ariff vacated his position after a motion by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was passed by the Parliament by a margin of two votes with 111 Members of Parliament voted for the motion and 109 voted against the motion.
At the same time, Mohamad Ariff also said that he has no problem stepping down from the position.
“I have no problem at all. From the beginning, I have said that I will leave if the Federal Constitution is observed.
“It has been observed whereby, there was a motion and votes have been counted. Thus, the Members of Parliament have decided. Not the Prime Minister or the Cabinet.
“This our Federal Constitution system,” he added.
Mohamad Ariff was replaced by the former Chairman of Election Commission (EC) Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun. – MalaysiaGazette
