KUALA LUMPUR – The decision if Barisan Nasional (BN) and its component parties should face the next general election alone with PAS in Muafakat Nasional (MN) needs to be decided as soon as possible.

According to the Deputy President of UMNO Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, the decision would enable the party to make preparations.

“The Sabah election decision showed that the political strategy and collaboration which UMNO sealed did not benefit UMNO. It further isolated UMNO’s role in Sabah.

“From a party which dominated Sabah for 27 years, UMNO is now merely an isolated political player in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition,” he said, referring to the decision in the formation of Sabah state government recently.

What happened in Sabah requires UMNO to rethink their political approach. According to Mohamad who is also fondly known as Tok Mat, based on Sabah, the continuation, influence and visibility of UMNO would be affected in the short span and would weaken UMNO in the long run.

“UMNO sacrificed by handing their strongest seats to certain party. It has significantly affected UMNO’s strength. It is even sadder that UMNO had to face independent candidates sponsored by certain quarters to weaken UMNO. The promises on relevant Cabinet portfolio were almost compromised.

Therefore, it is time for the President of UMNO (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) to provide a guide and clear direction for the party and all its members on how we should carry on with the cooperation with political opponents, he said.

According to him, a stern political consensus needs to take place to diffuse anxiety, dissatisfaction and anger among UMNO members for being taken for granted in the Sabah election.

“In bracing the future, UMNO must stop feeling nostalgic that the political cooperation through ‘Sheraton Move’ was to save the country.

“That episode is over. The next episode is how UMNO should steer the country, lead the country and create a better future for Malaysia through BN and not other political platform.

“We will be evaluated on what we can offer to Malaysia. Not by how big our sacrifices are for certain party or for the survival of Perikatan Nasional (PN),” said Mohamad. –MalaysiaGazette
