KUALA LUMPUR – The suggestion from UMNO to register Muafakat Nasional (MN) as an official political coalition would test the stance of PAS in MN as the party has just repeated its vow to support Muhyiddin and the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
With the proposal, the UMNO Political Bureau has indirectly pushed PAS to a corner – to continue their journey with PN or to return to MN, said veteran journalist, Datuk A. Kadir Jasin.
Elaborating on the statement by the Secretary-General of UMNO, Datuk Ahmad Maslan, he said that either the PN government has lost its majority mysteriously or it is like an egg positioned at the end of the bull’s horn.
“It has directly strengthened the allegation of Opposition Chief Anwar Ibrahim and the other quarters that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin, has lost the majority support.
“Besides that, the majority alleged by the President of Bersatu was merely a theory and conjecture. It has never been tested at the Dewan Rakyat and Muhyiddin has used various tricks to avoid that from happening,” he said in a statement today.
Therefore, he said, with the withdrawal of support from UMNO, the PN government is in a very uncertain position.
With the new terms and condition given by UMNO in exchange for their support, it would be tougher for PN.
However, the political analyst said that the statement made by Ahmad after the Political Bureau meeting without going through the UMNO Supreme Council also showed the internal conflicts within the party.
“It could be different if the matter is brought to the Supreme Council as it is obvious that some of the Supreme Council members are strong supporters of Muhyiddin as they hold comfortable positions in the PN Government,” he said. –MalaysiaGazette
