KUALA LUMPUR – “I had a role in defending him (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad).

“Everyone knows that in 1987, if I did not support him whole-heartedly, perhaps, he would be defeated.

“He would have lost to Tengku Razaleigh but that was our responsibility to state our confidence,” said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, referring to the UMNO Presidency Election 33 years ago which witnessed a ferocious fight between Dr Mahathir and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

The Opposition Chief also denied Mahathir’s opinion that he (Anwar) had nothing when Mahathir brought him into the government.

He said that he was already a committee in a global youth organisation besides holding position in Muslim Youth Movements in the country and abroad. He also played a role in the United Nations.

“Therefore, my role in the global arena was already known. He took me in and I thank him for that, it is true that he gave me the space. But, if he said that he took me from dust, from nothing, it’s alright then.

“That was a political statement,” he said.

Earlier, Dr Mahathir said that Anwar did not have the ability to manage the country and his leadership was tested by the President of PKR was acting for the position as the Prime Minister in 1997. According to Mahathir, Anwar also brought the country into huge debts, including with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to the Member of Parliament of Port Dickson, he confessed that as a human being, he experienced heartache, he felt offended throughout various experience including being imprisoned during Dr Mahathir’s reign.

However, for the benefit of the country, he welcomed Dr Mahathir’s ‘presence’ two years ago and put everything aside.

“However, if he keeps repeating the conspiracy and betrayal, that cannot happen. Now, I will just carry on following my way,” he said in an exclusive interview with the MalaysiaGazette.

On the position as the Prime Minister, the 73-year-old leader said that he was not all keen of wanting the position but the parties in the Pakatan Harapan, including Dr Mahathir himself, had agreed to it.

“This is not about Anwar wanting to become the PM. No. I was nominated by the parties in PH with a 92 majority now,” he said.

Although he is often dished with the question on why he wanted to become the Prime Minister so badly, Anwar continued to refer that as a development which was decided earlier.

According to Anwar, the matter was decided before PH won the 14th General Election (GE14) two years ago.

“I was nominated as the PM candidate in GE2018, the transition PM, Mahathir to Anwar Ibrahim and we won GE14.

“Therefore, that must be known. It wasn’t something which happened two weeks ago or last month as alleged,” he said.

The President of PKR also shared about his confidence in having an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, last month.

Anwar said that he had the confidence to have an audience with Al-Sultan Abdullah due to the confidence shown by the Members of Parliament from certain parties.

“I had an audience with the YDPA after having confidence with the amount of seats and the support from the Members of Parliament from the parties involved.

“That was the statement and the process may be impossible or unreasonable for me to have an audience with the YDPA in the situation when I was not confident with the numbers.

“But, I respect the wisdom of YDPA to delay and to ensure several considerations,” he said.

When asked if he is still confident with what he had presented to the King, Anwar said that it can only be proven with time.

“Insya-Allah, it would be straightened soon,” he added.

On 13 October, Anwar had an audience with the YDPA and verified that he has presented valid documentations on the strong support from the Members of Parliament towards him.

He also alleged that he had the support from over 120 Members of Parliament which could enable him to reinstate the PH government. –MalaysiaGazette
