KUALA LUMPUR – The government is confident that the controversies surrounding the wedding of a Muslim woman from Johor with the hockey captain of India will be resolved soon.

Minister at Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affair) Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said that the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) expressed the confidence in a statement.

“The government is confident and believe that that the issue will be handled soon by the Johor religious authority as what was communicated by the Chairman of the Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee. It also received the attention from the Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan of Johor,” Dr Zulkifli answered while winding up the policy level Budget 2021 at the Dewan Negara (Senate) today.

Yesterday, Dr Zulkifli advised the public not to politicise sensitive religious issues, on the contrary, wait for the explanation from the Johor religious authority to verify the status of the wedding between the Malaysian Muslim in India.

He said, Islam also demands its followers to obtain accurate information before making any assumptions or giving opinion.

Meanwhile, Dr Zulkifli also invited the people in the country to respect and follow the advice from the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar who ordered JAINJ and the Mufti Department of Johor to investigate the current religion status of the woman.

“I also invite all Muslims to respect the advice of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan of Johor to not make any premature assumptions in their interactions on the viral news.

“Moreover, it touches the religious status of a person and indirectly, her honour,” he added.

Sultan Ibrahim ordered an investigation on the allegation of a woman marrying the Indian national hockey player last week.

His Majesty wanted a verification on the religion status of the woman through her family members here through the Malaysian Embassy in India.

Last Wednesday, the Hockey Captain of India, Manpreet Singh Pawar held a wedding ceremony with his sweetheart from Malaysia, Illi Najwa Saddique.

The couple is said to have been in a relationship for eight years.

The wedding reception was held in Manpreet’s hometown in Mithapur near Jalandhar, Punjab.

Manpreet, 28, was clad in a traditional Punjabi wedding suit, meanwhile, Illi Najwa wore the traditional Punjabi bride suit while they exchanged their wedding vows.

The government through the Deputy Minister at Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said that Illi Najwa will be called to get further explanation on their religion status.
