KUALA LUMPUR – The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has granted his consent to rename Jalan Universiti in Petaling Jaya, Selangor as Jalan Prof Diraja Ungku Aziz.
The change will be implemented with immediate effect.
The Sultan of Selangor would like to immortalise the name of the renowned icon on the road as an appreciation towards the contributions and deeds of Allahyarham Professor Diraja Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid in the field of education and Malay economic.
For that, His Majesty also granted an audience to Ungku Aziz’s daughter, Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz to extend his wish and finalised the name of the road.
The selection for Jalan Universiti to be renamed as Jalan Prof Diraja Ungku Aziz fits the purpose as it is the main entrance to higher learning institutions such as the University of Malaya, International Islamic University Malaysia and MAHSA University.
Ungku Aziz was a lecturer at the University of Malaya (Singapore) from 1952 – 1961 before he was appointed as a Professor and then, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration of the University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur) from 1962-1965.
The 3.2 kilometre Jalan Universiti is the main road which connects Petaling Jaya to Kuala Lumpur. It was built in 1960 and is the first two-way street in Malaysia.
It connects to other main roads such as the Federal Highway, Jalan Prof. Khoo Kay Kim, Jalan Dato’ Abu Bakar 16/1 and Jalan Harapan. – MalaysiaGazette
