KUALA LUMPUR – The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) candidate from UMNO has yet to be finalised. However, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has left the issue to the two candidates from UMNO; Senior Minister of Defence, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein to discuss.
The Prime Minister will make the final decision and announce the name of his deputy after the discussion.
According to Sinchew Daily, Muhyiddin wants his deputy to be able to ‘control’ the different factions in UMNO so that the current ‘chaos’ can be ended thus strengthening the Perikatan Nasional government.
According to a close source to UMNO, Muhyiddin was ready to offer the position of DPM to UMNO, however, the gesture was halted as the President of UMNO, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wanted that position.
Due to Ahmad Zahid’s ongoing court cases, Muhyiddin hoped that the position could be given to a more appropriate candidate.
“Ismail Sabri has important position in the party and he is from the Ahmad Zahid and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s group.
“His appointed is believed to receive less rejection from UMNO,” said the source.
Nevertheless, if he is given the choice, the Prime Minister is more inclined to appoint Hishammuddin, especially after the latter had given a strong statement before the Supreme Council of UMNO.
Besides that, Hishammuddin’s good relationship with the Chinese government and the Saudi Arabia royalties also give him some ‘extra credits’.
On the relevant development, Sinchew Daily reported that the rumours about Muhyiddin is facing health issues and needs to surrender the administration to Hishammuddin while undergoing treatment in Singapore is baseless.
According to the source, Muhyiddin has been very busy and he will be chairing the National Security Council (MKN) meeting today to determine the standard operating procedures (SOP) in movement control. –MalaysiaGazette
