PUTRAJAYA – The government needs to take heed from what happened after the Sabah State Election.
Former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that if the 15th General Election (GE15) is held now, half of the Malaysians will be infected by Covid-19 and more people will die.
“I think that from our experience in Sabah, when there is a GE, Covid-19 will spread and it has not stop now.
“If we have another GE, 50 percent of us will be infected by Covid-19 and people will die,” he said during a news conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation today.
Therefore, he said that the government does not need to oblige the demands of certain quarters who are crazy about power.
“If we prioritise on politics, some people say, principles are not required and politics is more important.
“With GE, we sacrifice other people’s lives, not our own,” he added.
Mahathir is believed to be referring to the statement by the President of UMNO, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who demanded for the GE15 to be held as soon as possible to return the mandate to the people to choose the new government.
Last week, Ahmad Zahid said that more than 30 countries in the world have held general elections while facing the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a relevant development, Dr Mahathir was also asked if he would be defending his Langkawi Parliamentary seat, which he shared that he may not be contesting in GE15.
“I am 95-years-old. I can’t walk well and you can’t be asking me to contest again,” he added. –MalaysiaGazette
