KUALA LUMPUR – The Pakatan Harapan (PH) Presidency Council rejects the rational and reasons given by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who allegedly used the powers of emergency to save Malaysia from Covid-19.

According to PH, the excuses presented by the Prime Minister could not be accepted as the suspension of the Parliament and State Assemblies while the executive and judiciary could still function would affect the process of check and balance, hamper the national democracy process and deny the voices of the people.

The PH Presidency Council said, the power of emergency gives the absolute power to the Prime Minister to do whatever he can and anyhow he wants.

The statement was jointly issued by the President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the President of Parti Amanah Negara Mohamad Sabu and the Secretary-General of DAP Lim Guan Eng.

In the statement, the PH Presidency Council thinks that the existing law, including the Movement Control Order (MCO) announced yesterday is enough to gather all resources and strength to overcome the pandemic.

According to them, in the instance of taking over the private hospitals to assist in Covid-19 cases; the private hospitals are ready to help the government and the emergency powers would not be needed to get their cooperation.

On the general election issue, the PH Presidency Council sees that the actions taken before this such as, the declaration of emergency for a Parliamentary or State Assembly area is already sufficient.

For the Sarawak State Election, it does not have to be done until the end of August 2021.

Meanwhile, the 15th General Election (GE15) only needs to be held by 2023.

PH is also concerned that the declaration of emergency would affect the effects in reviving the economy and garnering the confidence of investors. It would not help in overcoming unemployment and loss of income among the people.

“Therefore, we think that Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s action in motioning for the emergency when he has lost the majority support of the Members of Parliament including Machang (Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakob) and Padang Rengas (Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz) means that this measure could not be accepted at all.

“Do not hide behind Covid-19 and burden the people with the proclamation of emergency to save yourself,” said the PH Presidency Council. –MalaysiaGazette
