KUALA LUMPUR – The people withdraw i-Lestari or i-Sinar from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) due to the loss or reduction of income do not need to pay zakat.

However, zakat must be paid if the withdrawal of i-Lestari and i-Sinar is made as an option when a person still has income to support basic living.

The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) provided the explanation in a Facebook post.

According to LZA, based on the Selangor State Zakat Collection Management System Fatwa 2013 (Amendment) related to the EPF savings withdrawal, zakat is compulsory on withdrawals by those who reach the age of 55, on the amount of money they withdraw.

Therefore, the zakat must be paid on each EPF withdrawal through the i-Lestari and i-Sinar schemes if a person fulfils the criteria. –MalaysiaGazette
