KUALA LUMPUR – The allegation made by a Fellow of the National Professors Council (MPN) stating that 99 percent of the UMNO Division Leaders are millionaires is shallow and purportedly aimed at shaming the largest Malay political party.
The Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) Communications Chief, Isham Jalil said that the accusation thrown by Dr. Muhammad Asri Mohd Ali is provocative, showing that UMNO has no integrity now and practices money politics and rampant corruption.
He said, the research conducted by the fellow was not during the era of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the President of UMNO.
On the contrary, he said, the research was done in 2002 or 19 years ago, during Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s era as the Prime Minister who led UMNO for over two decades.
“A video call between the UMNO Youth Chief and a professor which deliberately made provocative statement about his studies alleging that 99 percent of UMNO Division Leaders are millionaires.
“It isn’t surprising when money politics was rampant during Dr Mahathir’s era although he emphasised on fighting money politics. The fact is, he formed the money politics system in Malaysia.
“Prior to Dr Mahathir, during the era of Tunku Abdul Rahman until Tun Hussein Onn, money politics was not encouraged to take place,” he said in a statement today.
In a virtual youth forum on the future of Malaysia last Wednesday, Dr. Muhammad Asri, as the moderator quoted his research about the standard of living of millionaire UMNO Division Leaders,
The panellist of the forum, the UMNO Youth Chief, Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki spontaneously answered that he is not sure about the extend of truth about the research as he was still a student in 2002.
The other panellists in the virtual forum included the Member of Parliament of Muar, who is also the President of MUDA Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and political analyst, Prof. Datuk Dr. Raduan Che Rose.
Commenting further, Isham said that if the research by Dr. Muhammad Asri is right, a majority portion of wealthy fanatic followers during Dr Mahathir’s era are no longer in UMNO.
He said, most probably, they are in either Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) or Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) or they are strong supporters of the two parties.
“Therefore the professor should have channelled the question to Dr Mahathir and his followers in Bersatu or Pejuang or his cronies and not the current UMNO,” he said. –MalaysiaGazette
