KUALA LUMPUR – The 1 Gigabyte (1GB) daily free internet from all five telecommunication companies will be extended until 31 July this year.

The Corporate Communications Department of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said, the free data initiative has been extended several times and it was supposed to end on 30 April.

“The latest extension is made as an additional support for the people as the Covid-19 pandemic in the country has yet to stabilise.

“Furthermore, it would assist the school students who would be shifting back to the home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) after the Aidilfitri holidays as announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) recently.

“The daily 1GB free quota is an additional offer on top of the existing data subscription and it can be used to access video conferencing platforms and to manage teaching materials through email throughout the day without time restriction,” it said in a statement today.

However, the data cannot be used to browse social media, video streaming, music streaming and online gaming.

Among the companies involved with this initiative are Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile and Telekom Malaysia (TM).

Meanwhile, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YTL) will continue to support the education system by extending its Learn From Home (LFH) initiative until 30 September 2021 and it would encompass the students in higher learning institutions.

“The special package provides free SIM card with 40GB of data, free content and free smartphones to students from the B40 families.

“MCMC hopes that with the extension of the free 1GB daily internet until 31 July 2021 and other support given, it would provide a slight relief to the people to brace the new normal in education, work and others.

“The government will continue to mobilise initiatives such as the National Digital Network (JENDELA) and the MyDIGITAL Action Plan to ensure that the digitalisation development agenda is implemented inclusively, without anyone being marginalised,” said the MCMC. –MalaysiaGazette
