KUALA LUMPUR – The Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Datuk Seri Azam Baki needs to be suspended from carrying out any official duties.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) Presidency Council said that the measure needs to be taken after the arrest of three MACC senior officers on the allegation of power abuse and misappropriation in managing the case against Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid, the Director-General of Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO).

“The remand order has created various bad perceptions on MACC, causing Malaysians to question the integrity of the institution.

“We think that an investigation paper needs to be opened. A thorough investigation needs to be conducted and those who violated the law must be brought to justice,” said the statement.

Meanwhile, the PH Presidency Council welcomes the statement by Home Minister, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin during the Dewan Rakyat sitting yesterday, that an inquiry paper has been opened by the Malaysia Royal Police (PDRM) on the issue.

“We also think that the government should consider advising Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di Pertuan Agong to form a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate issues surrounding the MACC, and propose reformation measures on this vital institution,” it said in a joint-statement signed by its four leaders; President of PKR Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, President of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Mohamad Sabu, Secretary-General of DAP Lim Guan Eng and the President of United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau.

The MACC verified the arrest of three of its senior officers from 14 until 19 September, to assist in an investigation into power abuse and misappropriation in the management of case involving a former department head.

The three officers were brought to the Magistrate Court for a six-day remand beginning 14 September. -MalaysiaGazette
