KUALA LUMPUR – Graphic artist, political satirist and activist Fahmi Reza claimed trial after being charged with insulting PAS on his social media platform by relating the Islamist party with beer image.
Fahmi, or his real name, Mohd Fahmi Reza Mohd Zarin pleaded not guilty after the charges under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act were read to him before Judge M. M. Edwin Paramjothy this morning.
Fahmi Reza is charged with uploading an obscene post on 1 June 2021 with the intention to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person.
This was also not the first time the activist was charged. Last week, he faced charges involving quarantine regulation against a minister who returned from official visit abroad last year.
During the proceeding today, Judge Edwin ordered bail amounting to RM3,000 and fixed 30 March for the mention of case.
Upon conviction, Fahmi Reza could face the maximum fine of RM50,000 or one year in prison or both, and shall also be liable to a further fine of RM1,000 for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.
Meanwhile, Fahmi, who arrived at the lobby of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex brought along the allegedly ‘obscene’ sketch and showed it to the media before entering the court for his proceeding. -MalaysiaGazette
