KUALA LUMPUR – A lecturer from a public university went viral in the social media for saying words that purportedly insulted students from the B40 group.
The lecturer was lecturing a student during a virtual class for not owning a computer despite entering his fifth semester.
In the viral video, that professor knew about the economic situation of the student’s family and he was from the B40 group.
She also knew that the mother of the student had passed away and his father was jobless.
Professor: What are you using? Are you using a phone?
Student: Yes, Prof.
Professor: Where is your computer?
Student: I don’t have a computer, Prof.
Professor: Where do you stay?
Student: Seremban.
Professor: You stay at Seremban. What is your father working as?
Student: He is not working, Prof.
Professor: What is your mother working as?
Student: She has passed away, Prof.
Professor: Your mother has passed away. Your father is not working?
Student: Yes, Prof.
The lecturer then asked if the student had any other siblings, to which, he answered, yes.
Without enquiring further if his siblings are already working, the lecturer urged the student to ask his elder sister to sell her gold bracelet and buy him a computer.
In that conversation, the lecturer also said that she could not ‘sit’ with the B40 group as they place priorities on other things and not on education.
“Tell your sister, if she has gold bracelet, go sell it and buy a computer. I’m telling you, if you have a sister who has gold bracelet, sell that bracelet, buy a computer.
“No wonder you cannot learn properly because you don’t have a computer. After this, I will be teaching you excel and because of that, you will become a dropout student. It’s the fifth semester and you don’t have a computer.
“I am willing to not have clothes. I only have five pieces of them. Computer is very important. You only need RM800 to buy a computer. What is your problem?
“That’s why I cannot sit with the B40 people. They place importance on other things compared to their studies,” she said in length.
The video went viral in the social media, including on Facebook and TikTok.
Most of the netizens think that the lecturer should not issue such harsh words although she was trying to educate her students.
Nevertheless, the incident allegedly happened some time ago and the student has already graduated. – MalaysiaGazette
