PUTRAJAYA – The Ministry of Transport said that the usage of electric scooter or e-scooter requires license.
According to its Minister, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, the license would be imposed on both parties, the users and also the suppliers of the product.
“We will impose license on both. If they want to supply it, they need to go through licensing and tax. We want to check the specification. Although it is e-bicycle by name, it has the speed of a motorcycle. We need to see it first and we cannot just depend on its name.
“Some use other names but we will look at its function and definition about micro mobility. We need to look at this because it has become a trend at many places.
“At a quiet place with high speed, it could lose control. Accidents could happen,” he said during the launch of national level Hari Raya Aidilfitri Road Safety Campaign and Integrated Ops at the Putrajaya Cooperation Complex today.
Ka Siong was asked to comment about the report by MalaysiaGazette today on the e-scooter riders riding dangerously at Taman Tasik Perdana Cyberjaya.
An observation by MalaysiaGazette last night found that most of the e-scooter riders endangered their lives and the safety of other motorists.
Ka Siong said, the usage of electric vehicles such as e-scooter is subjected to the amendment of Act 333 of the Road Transport Act 1987, amendment 2020.
The amendment encompassed of all aspects of vehicles categorised under micro mobility vehicles.
“We need to scrutinise all approaches as there are many micro mobility. Names like e-bicycle but they’re not bicycles. It has higher speed, and it does not use the brake pedal. We need to look at each and everyone of it so that we would not overlook.
“The definition needs to be clear and we will control it via regulation,” he added. -MalaysiaGazette
