KUALA LUMPUR – The debate between two political figures, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has yet to obtain approval from the office of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya (UM).
In a statement, the Universiti Malaya Students’ Union (UMSU) said that an official written application was sent to the university several weeks ago after the official announcement by the representatives of the debaters.
“We request the kind consideration of the University to grant approval for this debate immediately.
“The Union believes that it is time for a fresh new politics, concurrent with the national political vessel to increase the participation and political literacy of the youths, especially among the university students,” said the student union in a statement.
At the same time, they have no other more suitable vessel to turn their hopes into reality, other than organising such event in the UM campus.
“To celebrate democracy and values beyond political understanding, the UMSU once again, state our full support to any debate or programme based one mature and substantive critical discussions.
“It also includes the debate between Datuk Seri Anwar and Datuk Seri Najib,” UMSU said.
Earlier, Isham Jalil, who represented Najib and Fahmi Fadzil, who represented Anwar said in a joint-news conference that the debate between the duo will be held on 12 May at the Dewan Tunku Canselor of UM in Kuala Lumpur at 9.00 pm.
